The Albino Threadfin Acara (Acarichthys heckelii ‘albino’) is a rare and elegant South American cichlid prized for its graceful movement, flowing fin extensions, and unique albino coloration. This stunning variant lacks dark pigmentation, resulting in a creamy white to pale peach body accented by translucent fins and striking red or pink eyes. When mature, its long, thread-like fin filaments trail gracefully behind it, giving the fish a refined, almost ethereal appearance in the aquarium.
Native to slow-moving rivers and floodplains of the Amazon basin, the Albino Threadfin Acara thrives in calm, warm waters with sandy or silty substrates. Its natural behavior is gentle and deliberate, spending much of its time gliding near the bottom while sifting sand for food. Unlike many cichlids, this species is relatively peaceful, making it an excellent choice for large, well-planned community tanks with other calm, similarly sized fish.
Adult Albino Threadfin Acaras typically reach 7–9 inches in length. Males often grow slightly larger and develop longer, more pronounced fin extensions, especially during maturity and breeding periods. While generally mild-mannered, they may display territorial behavior when spawning, particularly around nesting sites.
This species is omnivorous with a strong preference for meaty foods. In the aquarium, it does best on a varied diet of high-quality sinking cichlid pellets, frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and mysis shrimp, along with occasional vegetable-based offerings. A fine sand substrate is highly recommended, as it supports their natural sifting behavior and helps prevent mouth injury.
With proper care, excellent water quality, and a stress-free environment, the Albino Threadfin Acara can live 10–12 years, making it a rewarding and eye-catching addition for intermediate to advanced aquarists seeking something truly unique.
