Electric Blue Ram

The Electric Blue Ram (Mikrogeophagus ramirezi) is a stunning selectively bred color morph of the classic German Blue Ram, prized for its intense neon-blue coloration, compact size, and gentle personality. This dwarf South American cichlid is a favorite among aquarists looking to add vibrant color and graceful behavior to planted and community aquariums.

Electric Blue Rams display an iridescent metallic blue body that appears to glow under aquarium lighting. Unlike wild-type rams, they lack much of the black barring and red accents, giving them a clean, luminous appearance from head to tail. Their bodies are short and oval-shaped, with delicate fins that shimmer as they move. When healthy and well kept, their coloration is uniform and vivid, making them one of the most eye-catching freshwater fish available.

Despite their brilliant appearance, Electric Blue Rams are known for their peaceful and shy temperament. They do best in calm community setups with small, non-aggressive tank mates such as tetras, rasboras, Corydoras, and peaceful dwarf fish. Males may show mild territorial behavior, especially during breeding, but aggression is usually limited and manageable in a properly sized aquarium with hiding places.

Native to the warm, slow-moving waters of the Orinoco River basin, this species thrives in aquariums that replicate those conditions. Soft substrate, driftwood, leaf litter, and live plants help them feel secure and encourage natural behavior. Because Electric Blue Rams are more sensitive than their wild counterparts, stable water conditions are critical to their long-term health.

Electric Blue Rams are omnivorous micro-predators and require a high-quality, varied diet. They thrive on premium micro pellets or granules formulated for cichlids, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms. Frequent small feedings help maintain their energy, coloration, and overall health.

With proper care, excellent water quality, and a stress-free environment, Electric Blue Rams can live 2–4 years and often form strong pair bonds.
