The L128 Blue Phantom Pleco (Hemiancistrus sp. L128) is a highly sought-after freshwater catfish prized for its deep blue coloration, bold white spotting, and striking presence on the aquarium bottom. Native to fast-flowing rivers of the Orinoco River basin in Venezuela and Colombia, this pleco is adapted to clean, oxygen-rich water and rocky environments, making it both visually impressive and rewarding to keep.
The body of the L128 Blue Phantom Pleco is thick, muscular, and armored with bony plates, typical of pleco species. Its coloration ranges from dark navy to steel blue, accented by crisp white to pale blue spots scattered across the body and fins. Under strong aquarium lighting, the blue tones can appear especially intense, giving the fish an almost metallic glow. As it matures, the coloration deepens and the contrast becomes more pronounced. Adult size typically reaches 7–9 inches, making it a solid but manageable pleco for medium to large aquariums.
Despite its intimidating appearance, the Blue Phantom Pleco is generally peaceful and reclusive. It spends much of its time hiding among rocks, caves, and driftwood during the day, becoming more active at night. It can be territorial toward other plecos or similar bottom-dwellers, especially males, so adequate space and multiple hiding spots are essential. When housed properly, it coexists well with medium to large, non-aggressive tank mates.
This species thrives in aquariums that mimic its natural habitat—strong filtration, high oxygen levels, and moderate to strong water flow. Rockwork, driftwood, and caves are essential for security and stress reduction. Driftwood is especially important, as it aids digestion and provides natural grazing surfaces.
The L128 Blue Phantom Pleco is omnivorous with a strong carnivorous preference. A high-quality diet should include sinking carnivore pellets or wafers, frozen foods such as bloodworms and brine shrimp, and occasional vegetable matter like zucchini or spinach. While it may graze on algae, it should not be relied upon as an algae-control fish.
