The L200 Green Phantom Pleco (Hemiancistrus subviridis) is one of the most striking and sought-after plecos in the aquarium hobby, admired for its vivid coloration, bold patterning, and powerful presence. Native to fast-flowing rivers of Venezuela and Colombia, this species inhabits clear, oxygen-rich waters where it clings to rocks and driftwood in moderate to strong currents.
What truly sets the Green Phantom Pleco apart is its intense emerald-green to blue-green body coloration, often highlighted by lighter spotting across the head and body. The fins are large and dramatic, edged with bright white or pale blue tips when young, giving the fish a high-contrast, almost glowing appearance under aquarium lighting. As it matures, the coloration deepens and becomes more uniform, lending the fish a rugged, prehistoric look that stands out even in large tanks.
The L200 is a robust, muscular pleco, typically reaching 7–8 inches in length. Its broad head, pronounced odontodes (spines), and wide pectoral fins give it a strong, armored appearance. While generally more active and visible than many common plecos, it still appreciates plenty of hiding places and shaded areas created by driftwood and rockwork.
Temperament-wise, the Green Phantom Pleco is semi-aggressive, especially toward other plecos or bottom-dwelling fish with similar body shapes. It is best kept singly unless housed in a very large aquarium with ample territory. With mid- and upper-level tank mates, it is usually peaceful, making it an excellent addition to large South American community or cichlid aquariums.
Diet is another key to this species’ success. Unlike algae-only plecos, Hemiancistrus subviridis is an omnivore with a strong preference for protein. A well-rounded diet should include high-quality sinking carnivore or pleco wafers, frozen foods such as bloodworms and brine shrimp, and supplemental vegetable matter like zucchini or spinach. Driftwood should always be present to aid digestion and replicate its natural environment.
