The L397 Alenquer Tiger Pleco (Panaqolus sp. L397) is a highly sought-after dwarf pleco prized for its bold striping, compact size, and fascinating natural behavior. Native to the Rio Xingu and nearby tributaries in Brazil, this species comes from fast-flowing, oxygen-rich waters with rocky substrates and submerged driftwood—conditions that strongly influence its care requirements in captivity.

Visually, the L397 is striking and unmistakable. Its body is dark chocolate to charcoal in color, overlaid with high-contrast cream to yellow tiger-like bands that run vertically and diagonally across the body and fins. These patterns remain vivid into adulthood and vary slightly from individual to individual, giving each fish a unique appearance. The body is thick and muscular with a broad head, powerful sucker mouth, and strong odontodes, all adaptations for clinging to rocks and wood in swift currents.

Unlike many larger plecos, the Alenquer Tiger Pleco stays relatively small, typically reaching 4–5 inches, making it an excellent choice for aquarists who want a dramatic pleco without the massive adult size of common species. It is mostly nocturnal and somewhat shy, spending daylight hours tucked into caves or under driftwood, then becoming more active after lights dim.

Diet is a key part of successful long-term care. As a member of the Panaqolus genus, L397 plecos are true wood-eaters (xylophages). Driftwood is not optional—it is essential for digestion and overall health. Their diet should be supplemented with high-quality sinking wafers, pleco-specific foods, algae-based pellets, and occasional vegetables such as zucchini or squash. Protein-rich foods can be offered sparingly.

Ideal Water Parameters

To thrive, the L397 Alenquer Tiger Pleco requires clean, stable water with strong filtration and high oxygen levels:

  • Temperature: 78–86°F (25–30°C)

  • pH: 5.8–7.2

  • Hardness: Soft to moderately soft (2–8 dGH)

  • Flow: Moderate to strong current

  • Oxygenation: High (air stones or strong surface agitation recommended)

Regular water changes are crucial, as this species is sensitive to poor water quality.

In terms of temperament, L397 plecos are peaceful but territorial toward their own kind, especially males. Providing multiple caves and hiding spots helps reduce aggression and stress. They do well in community aquariums with calm to moderately active tank mates that enjoy similar warm-water conditions.

With proper care, excellent water quality, and plenty of driftwood, the L397 Alenquer Tiger Pleco can live 10–15 years, making it a long-term and rewarding addition for dedicated aquarists. Its dramatic patterning, manageable size, and specialized behavior make it a standout pleco for both collectors and display-focused freshwater setups.
