Native to the Rio Xingu and nearby tributaries in Brazil, this species comes from fast-flowing, oxygen-rich waters with rocky substrates and submerged driftwood—conditions that strongly influence its care requirements in captivity.
Visually, the L397 is striking and unmistakable. Its body is dark chocolate to charcoal in color, overlaid with high-contrast cream to yellow tiger-like bands that run vertically and diagonally across the body and fins. These patterns remain vivid into adulthood and vary slightly from individual to individual, giving each fish a unique appearance. The body is thick and muscular with a broad head, powerful sucker mouth, and strong odontodes, all adaptations for clinging to rocks and wood in swift currents.
