The Red Spot Severum (Heros efasciatus) is a large, striking South American cichlid admired for its bold red markings, intelligent behavior, and graceful presence in the aquarium. Native to the Amazon River basin, this species naturally inhabits slow-moving rivers, flooded forest areas, and calm tributaries where warm, soft water and abundant cover are common.

Red Spot Severums feature a tall, oval-shaped body with a base coloration that ranges from olive green to golden bronze. Their defining characteristic is the distinct red spotting and red shoulder patch, which becomes deeper and more vibrant as the fish matures and receives proper nutrition. Subtle vertical bars may appear depending on mood and environment, adding to their dynamic appearance. Adults typically reach 8–10 inches, with males often growing larger and developing longer, more pointed fins.

Despite their size, Red Spot Severums are known for their relatively peaceful and personable temperament. They are intelligent, quickly recognizing their keeper and often interacting at the front of the tank. While generally calm, they can become territorial during breeding or when housed with aggressive tank mates. A spacious aquarium with driftwood, rocks, and visual barriers helps reduce stress and encourages natural behavior.

In captivity, they thrive in warm, clean water with stable parameters. Proper water quality is essential for long-term health and coloration.

Ideal Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 75–82°F (24–28°C)

  • pH: 6.0–7.5

  • Water Hardness: Soft to moderately hard (2–12 dGH)

  • Tank Size: Minimum 75 gallons for a single adult (larger recommended for pairs or communities)

  • Water Flow: Slow to moderate

  • Water Changes: 25–40% weekly recommended

Red Spot Severums are omnivores and require a balanced diet to maintain health and coloration. High-quality cichlid pellets should be supplemented with frozen or live foods such as bloodworms and brine shrimp, along with plant-based foods like spirulina, algae wafers, and blanched vegetables.

With proper care, stable water conditions, and a varied diet, the Red Spot Severum can live 10–15 years, making it an excellent centerpiece fish for intermediate to advanced aquarists seeking a large, colorful, and interactive freshwater cichlid.
