The Tessellated Eel (Gymnothorax favagineus)—often called the Tessellated Moray—is a dramatic and powerful saltwater predator renowned for its bold mosaic-like pattern and commanding presence. This species is native to the Indo-Pacific region, where it inhabits coral reefs, rocky crevices, and lagoon systems, spending much of its time wedged into caves with only its head exposed.

Visually, Gymnothorax favagineus is unmistakable. Its thick, muscular body is covered in a striking tessellated pattern of dark brown to black polygon-shaped blotches set against a creamy white to pale yellow background. This honeycomb-like design provides excellent camouflage among rocks and coral while giving the eel a highly ornamental appearance in captivity. The head is broad and powerful, equipped with sharp teeth designed for gripping prey, and its constant open-mouth posture—used for respiration—adds to its intimidating, prehistoric look.

The Tessellated Eel is a large and assertive species, capable of reaching lengths of 5–6 feet in the wild, though aquarium specimens are typically smaller with proper space management. Because of its size and strength, it is best suited for very large, secure aquariums with heavy rockwork and tight-fitting lids. PVC pipes or deep caves are strongly recommended to provide shelter and reduce stress.

Temperament-wise, this moray is aggressive and predatory. It should only be housed with large, robust tank mates such as triggerfish, large angelfish, or groupers. Small fish and crustaceans will almost certainly be viewed as food. While not usually aggressive toward humans, care must be taken during feeding and maintenance, as this eel has powerful jaws and poor eyesight.

Diet consists primarily of meaty marine foods, including shrimp, squid, fish fillets, clam, and other seafood offered via feeding tongs. A varied diet helps maintain health and reduces nutritional deficiencies. Feeding 2–3 times per week is usually sufficient for adult specimens.

Recommended Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 74–80°F (23–27°C)

  • Salinity: 1.020–1.025 specific gravity

  • pH: 8.1–8.4

  • Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH

  • Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm (very sensitive to poor water quality)

  • Nitrate: <20 ppm (lower preferred)

  • Tank Size: 300+ gallons recommended for long-term care

With proper housing, excellent filtration, and a stable marine environment, the Tessellated Eel can live 20 years or more in captivity. Its bold pattern, impressive size, and raw predatory elegance make Gymnothorax favagineus a true showpiece species—best reserved for experienced marine aquarists prepared to meet its demanding care requirements.
